Social workers are regulated health professionals who work with individuals, families, groups, and communities to improve individual and collective well-being. They respond to social issues like racism, poverty, and unemployment. Also, social workers advocate for social justice, human rights and fair access to health and social services (CASW, n.d)

Social Workers assist their clients by building therapeutic alliances. They collaborate with clients to design and implement diverse programs that are tailored to meet the psycho-social well-being of individuals, families, and communities. At diverse levels of practice such as micro, mezzo and macro, they provide services that meet individuals, families, communities, and larger societal needs. Services Social Workers provide at every level are:
- Therapy/Counselling/Coaching
- The provision of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of diverse mental health and social conditions.
- Social policy analysis and advocacy
- Serving as a resource person to individual, family community, and policy makers

- Community capacity building

Social Work is a regulated profession under the Social Work and Social Service Work Act, 1998, S.O. 1998, c. 31. The titles Social Worker (SW), Registered Social Worker (RSW), and Social Service Worker (SSW) or Registered Social Service Worker or RSSW are protected under the Act. To use the title “Registered Social Worker”, or “RSW” “Social Worker”, or “SW”, Registered Social Service Worker”, or “RSSW”, Social Service Worker”, or “SSW” worker must be registered with the college of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (CSWSSW) of the province or territory where they intend to practice; and continue to renew their license annually.
To be registered as a social worker and use the protected titles, registrants must possess a Bachelor of Social Work degree (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from an institution accredited by the CWSSW. To be registered as a Social Service Worker, registrant must possess a diploma in social service worker program from an institution accredited by the CSWSSW. Internationally trained registrants or registrants with qualifying educational credentials in related field of study must follow the College guidelines and requirements for credentials evaluations and registrations.
Social Workers must complete the annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements as part of their annual registration requirements. Through CPD, Social Workers are able to demonstrate how they advance their skills, and knowledge in evidence-based treatments and intervention approaches that meet global best practices and are in line with the dynamic needs of the population they serve. Also, to meet CPD requirements, social workers engage in research and training that are relevant to their CPD goals.
A Social Worker or Social Service Worker may engage in social work practice within an organization or in private practice. To access the services of a worker, client either consult an organization or social worker private practice location.
